Skin is our body’s largest organ and natural barrier. We do so much in our day-to-day lives to protect ourselves from harmful toxins and chemicals, like eating organic foods, but can forget that skin is not impenetrable. It’s important to remember that what we put on our skin is actually being absorbed into our bodies. One of the first steps to stopping these harmful toxins from impacting our health is to start with what we are putting on our skin.
The problem with conventional skin care is that, believe it or not, it is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Skin care companies have free reign to determine which ingredients are “safe” and which are not. Unfortunately, the average person shopping for skin care products pays more attention to the result of what the product promises rather than the deeper impact it can have down the road. Many of the ingredients deemed “safe” in traditional skin care products include harmful toxins and chemicals such as parabens, which are classified as endocrine disruptors, and even carcinogens like formaldehyde, which have been linked to an increased risk of cancer.
Aside from future health concerns, conventional skin care products contain ingredients that can be extremely irritating to the skin. Oftentimes brands that claim to be “natural” will contain synthetic ingredients, chemicals and fillers. It’s important to check the labels on your skin care products for any red flags, like talc, fragrance or ingredients that you cannot pronounce. These added chemicals that you are consistently applying to your skin can cause irritations that come in the form of acne, redness, itching, hormonal disruptions, and even the weakening of the immune system.
When selecting a natural skincare product, it’s important to check for a few key factors. You should always check the label of the product and make sure it is free from any harmful chemicals, irritants, or preservatives. At the same time, check that all of the ingredients are all natural and organic. Products that are never tested on animals and vegan are another way to ensure that the product you are putting on your skin will not be harmful to your body.
There are so many benefits to natural skin care, but one of the most important is having truly healthy, balanced skin. Our health comes from the inside out, and we have to remember that what we put on our skin is just as, if not more important than what we put in our bodies. Removing as many toxins and chemicals as possible will ultimately lead to a decreased risk in future disease and serious health concerns over time.
